Dear President Forsee:
We, the undersigned students, faculty, and alumni of the University of Missouri believe climate change is a serious threat to our environment, our economy and our national security, and it demands immediate action. We also believe that comprehensive energy reform at the federal level is of vital importance, not only for the health of our environment, but also for the future of our University and its students.
At a time when other universities are racing to be at the forefront of the field in clean energy technology and climate science, we cannot afford to stand on the sidelines of history. We are proud of the strides the University of Missouri has made in reducing our pollution, and believe that we must strive to take the lead on forward-thinking energy policy. While you have expressed concerns about the possible financial impact of the American Clean Energy and Security Act on the University of Missouri, these concerns have been definitively allayed by our elected officials.
The time is now for the University of Missouri system to reestablish its credibility as a leader on this issue. The next generation of business leaders, scientists, workers and policy makers are right here on our campuses, and we cannot afford for the University to be left at the starting gate.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you send another letter to Missouri’s Congressional delegation stating that your concerns have been addressed and that you support responsible, comprehensive energy reform. We also ask that you publicly reaffirm the University System’s adherence to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, and redouble the University’s efforts to find the solutions that will enable all Missourians to transition to a clean energy future.
