Olivette: Solar at Home

Submitted by Bernard Waxman:

We partially heat our home with a solar green house and two solar heating panels. Together they supply between 30% and 50% of home's heating. The remainder is supplied by natural gas.

Everyday Conservation

Submitted by Daedra Smith:

In our small 2-bedroom condominium, we make efforts to conserve on an individual level. We turn out lights and appliances whenever they are not in use. We recycle through our local trash service all recyclable plastics, glass, paper, aluminum and tin, etc. We purchase green, environmentally friendly cleaning products and buy groceries from suppliers who use sustainable or organic practices. I take the Metro bus to school twice a week, and weather-permitting ride my bicycle to run local errands and also for fun. When we have short errands to run together, we try to walk wherever we have to go. We try to conserve gas by consolidating errands and doing them all at once. We are learning as we go, but I think we've made a good start!!

Dancing Rabbit Common House and Bed and Breakfast Under Construction

Submitted by Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage:

Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is a community of almost 50 people, dedicated to ecological sustainability. We are 100% off-grid using solar and wind for electricity, we share only 3 cars in our car co-op, we have 17 homes built of reclaimed lumber, strawbales, cob, and earthbags. We get over half our food onsite or within 10 miles and get most of our water by collecting rain. Our whole point is to show that sustainable living IS possible. Come for a tour or visit.
